THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, IN THE SUN´S PATH

The Dominican Republic is considered to be the main tourist destination in the Caribbean. During the past years it has experienced a fast growth in European, Latin American, Canadian, and American tourists. It has a strategic geographic position that enables it to develop as a gateway or hub.

With more than 9 million inhabitants, it occupies a territory of 48,400 km2, most of which is formed by coast and beaches.

The Dominican Republic has a hotel capacity of more than 60,000 rooms; 40% more than any other destination in the Caribbean.

A growing economy

  • In the Dominican Republic there are 300 American companies and other 200 international companies.
  • According to the CEI-RD, 2008 made history in foreign investment, with more than 2,000 million dollars invested. Projected investments for 2009 will be based on tourism, mining, telecommunications, energy, agriculture and farming, and housing projects. It has been estimated that for the year 2009 foreign investment in tourism will be around US$1,411.6 million.
